8 March: International Day of Women

You must have heard or seen news reports and information about the Day of March 8 is International Day of Women.

Why March 8?

From 1909 to 1913, Americans celebrated the National Day of the Woman every last Sunday of February. In 1910, the International Socialist established a Women's Day, international in character, among others for the extension of universal suffrage to women. This Day was celebrated for the first time March 19, 1911. What

demanded women?

- the right to vote and hold public office,
- the right to work, vocational training
- the cessation of discrimination in the workplace.

Two years later, the last Sunday in February 1913 Within the framework of the peace movement that was developing on the eve of the First World War, Russian women celebrated their first International Women's Day.

In 1917 while 2 million Russian soldiers had been killed, Russian women again chose the last Sunday in February to strike and claim "bread and peace" .

Four days later, it was the "February Revolution": The Tsar Nicolas II abdicated and the provisional government granted voting rights to women. This Sunday history, celebrated Feb. 23 by the Julian calendar in use in Russia, fell on March 8 ... the Gregorian calendar used elsewhere in Europe.

Finally, in December 1977 the General Assembly of the UN adopted a resolution establishing a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace, whose date was left to the discretion Member States. France has recognized this day in 1982.

And today, what do we do that day?

Organized in developed countries as in developing countries, this day has a global dimension. Increasingly, the International Women's Day is the perfect time to reflect on progress, request changes and to celebrate acts of courage and determination of ordinary women who played an extraordinary role in the history of human women.

The International Women's Day is still relevant today as equality between men and women is still not reached.

In Burkina Faso, Algeria, Laos, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus, the International Day of Women's Rights is declared holiday.
