March 9, 2009: 50 Years of the Barbie doll


Oh Barbie! Everyone knows it, both girls and boys!

Well it turns 50 on Monday March 9.

In its first year, the doll designed by Ruth Handler fourteen years after the creation of Mattel sells 300,000 copies at three dollars apiece.

Fifty years later, the doll is the most popular toy on the planet. USA, 90% of girls aged three to ten years have at least one. On average, American girls between three and six years have twelve.

Symbol of the American lifestyle, disputed by the feminist movement, it leaves no one indifferent. But today girls have changed and their focus has shifted to computers and mobile phones.

the last quarter, it is up 6% from the U.S. and 28% worldwide. In November, the giant toy, the Barbie brand accounts for one fifth of sales, announced it was cutting a thousand jobs because of economic slowdown.

attempt to redress the balance, the manufacturer enters the market in China: Friday, March 6, opened its first store "House of Barbie" in China, on six floors of a building in Shanghai. Monday March 9, Mattel Barbie organize an evening in a villa in Malibu!
